Schloss Düneck

The manor house "Schloss Düneck," built in 1871, is surrounded by a 3.6-hectare park with wildlife, a tea house, an orangery, and a fish pond. The view from the main portal of the four-story main building towards the nearly 800-year-old "Adelige Kloster“ (a noble cloister) in the Pinnau meadows is as picturesque as it is unforgettable. Schloss Düneck was constructed by Detlef Lienau, a successful architect on the American East Coast and a student of Schinkel, for his brother Michael Lienau, who had become wealthy as an exporter of French wines in America, and his illustrious wife Sarah, who hailed from one of New York's founding families.

Stylistically, as was common for the great mansions in the USA at the time, elements of the chateau style mix with Victorian and Neo-Grec elements, here contrasted with North German brickwork.
Acquired by its current owners in 2021, the manor was restored to its original layout using the building plans found in an architectural archive at Columbia University. The 150-year-old tile, parquet, and plank floors were refurbished, and almost all of the 160 wooden windows, doors, and portals were meticulously restored by hand. Layers of paint were removed from the walls one by one until the original wall colors and coverings became visible again.
The vaulted and stucco ceilings were uncovered, and the large glass roof of the gallery hall was renewed with colored glass, which now casts magical reflections on the Pompeian red walls in sunlight. Just as carefully as the incomparable architecture of Detlef Lienau was restored, the interior is characterized by a consistent modern design from Italian, French, English, Austrian, and German designers and manufacturers.

About Us

With Schloss Düneck and its magnificent park, we have fulfilled a heartfelt wish: to create an extraordinary place so close to Hamburg for our family, our guests, and occasionally the public. Since its completion, we have already experienced many inspiring days here, with celebrations and festivities, picnics in the park, music, art, culinary delights, tea times, and discussion panels—simply wonderful!

We are Thani Huynh and Andreas Hanitsch. She comes from the fashion industry and is a passionate host, while he needs new experiences, encounters, and projects like air to breathe.
In recent years, we have been able to realise many of our ideas in the old waterworks on the Falkensteiner Ufer in Blankenese. With the almost unlimited possibilities at Schloss Düneck, we would now like to take the next step.

What Schloss Düneck Has to Offer:

While Düneck is primarily our private residence, we uphold the tradition of the original builder's family by maintaining an open house.

The main house, with approximately 1,300 square meters, consists of the main floor, a garden level, an upper floor, and an attic.
  • On the main floor, you will find a gallery hall with a Steinway concert grand piano, directly adjacent to a large dining room, a bridge lounge, a golden salon, a bar lounge, a library, and a fantastic conservatory with 150-year-old vines, as well as a pantry kitchen.
  • On the garden level, there is a large kitchen counter under a barrel vault with a view of the park, a dining and wine lounge, a movies room, and sanitary and pantry areas.
  • On the upper and attic floors, there are ten guest suites, each uniquely themed and featuring en-suite marble bathrooms, and a breakfast salon.
As we are often asked about the interiors: Our project was planned and overseen by ourselves assisted by Giorgio Gullotta Architects. The exquisite furniture, wall coverings, and chandeliers come from various sources, including Edra, Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten, Gervasoni, Luiz, Maßtischlerei Mehlig, Devon & Devon, Rubelli, Dedar, Matthew Williamson, Sogni di Cristallo, and from the Marché aux Puces in Saint Ouen. Our tiles were custom-made by Fornace Bernasconi, and the paints used by A.W. Mayer painters are from Caparol Icons and Farrow & Ball. Tableware, glasses, and cutlery are from Dibbern, La Rochère, and Broggi, among others.

The orangery, formerly the orchid and palm house, is currently in an unrestored state and covers approximately 280 square meters. It can be used as an external building, for example, for photo shoots. The tea house by the fish pond accommodates up to 10 guests. Additionally, two charming safari tents, covering about 100 square meters, are available in the park.

Accommodation options are available in the surrounding area, and Schloss Düneck is accessible from Hamburg within 25-40 minutes by shuttle. Parking spaces are available on the premises and within walking distance.

We look forward to hearing your ideas, feel free to reach out to us!
